It can also mean the difference between seasickness and noise that keeps you up all night -- or the sounds of waves lulling you to sleep like a baby or awesome views. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the best room on a cruise ship. Lower and more central-positioned accommodations are more stable.
What is the Best Room Location on a Cruise Ship?
The most famous liner having plenty of single cabins (designed specifically for solo travelers) is Norwegian Epic. Every passenger room on its ocean ships is a balcony cabin or a suite, something that is unusual in the cruise world, and these cabins break down into just a few subcategories. This makes the process of booking a room on a Viking vessel relatively simple compared to booking a room on many other ships.

But on Sept. 17 over a thousand miles from this cruising hot spot, the Oceania Vista was docked in New York City. When it comes to choosing suites, it's best to figure out how much space you really need, what amenities are important to you and what you can afford to spend. Suites on most ships are often the first category to sell out, partly because there are fewer of them, and partly because they often offer extremely good value. For this reason, it's important to decide early what kind of suite you'd like. Depending on your desire to socialize, soak up the sun or enjoy some peace and quiet, you'll want to think strategically about where your cabin is aboard the cruise ship. That's particularly true as today's megaships -- like Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas -- can mean long walks to your room throughout the day.

Sit out on your veranda and enjoy the sea breeze and port views as you sip your coffee in the morning, or enjoy a glass of wine and sunset views in the evening. If want to cruise with your children you'd better book a stateroom close to kids entertainment facilities. Like many other balconies on the ship, these are visible from the decks above, so complete privacy is not part of the package. A hair dryer, a safe, a non-stocked mini bar unit and a flat-screen TV. In my balcony cabin, there was a floor-to-ceiling window and sliding glass door. Standard cabins have plenty of storage space when you add up cubbies, drawers, closets and space beneath the beds. Flat-screen TVs are interactive so you can order room service, check your onboard account or book an excursion using your remote. All cabins include complimentary tote bags, hair dryers, mini-bars, safes, wooden hangers, robes and blended bath products that include shampoo, conditioner and lotion.
The layout also shows the exact positioning of furniture, 3 baths (1 with hot tub), large seating area, 2 double-sofabeds, 2 connecting balconies. Our first impression when entering the room was that the cabin was laid out more like a traditional balcony stateroom, with the bed off to the side, instead of positioned up against the inside wall. This made the room feel bigger, even though the Royal Caribbean website states the Promenade Stateroom is only 10 square feet larger than an inside cabin at 160 sq. If your main priority is adventuring through tropical paradise, grab a Studio stateroom for a place to get some shuteye and take a clean shower before you head out on your next excursion.

Balcony staterooms and Suites located aft or forward are the most expensive. Most cruise companies (especially those with large-sized vessels in the fleets) divide the main cabin types into subcategories. These grades are marked with numbers (like for balcony cabins - B1, B2, B3, B4) and are displayed on the deck layouts with different colors. Best-view cabins are located forward (at the ship's front/bow) or aft (at the ship's stern). These rooms have the largest balconies and widest ocean views. For the best choice of such rooms choose Carnival or Royal Caribbean.
Having stayed in multiple inside cabins, we are familiar with the layout and dimensions. Cruise ship cabins are small by nature, so we are used to the tight quarters; but if you are a first time cruiser, you may have a little bit of a shock when you enter any cabin, nevermind an inside one. And, finally, some cabins on Deck 9 and other parts of the ship have balconies that can be seen from above, so for those seeking complete privacy, these might not be your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time exploring ports and partaking in onboard activities, the type and location of cabin might be of less importance.

When choosing a stateroom for your cruise, you have plenty of options. The Havana Zone is located on forward Deck 8 and contains six Cabana Suites along with a variety of staterooms that include Interiors and Oceanviews. The Havana Cabanas have balconies with chairs and hammocks that overlook an open promenade that wraps around the front of the ship. All Havana staterooms have colorful, Cuban-inspired decorative treatments and have exclusive access to a sun deck with an outdoor bar and a small infinity wading pool in a spectacular perch overlooking the sea.
Directly behind the desk area was a small seating area complete with a sofa and coffee table which came in handy for those room service trays at breakfast time. Of course, the couch never ends up being a place to sit but rather a storage area and “zoo” for the towel animal creations. The extra 10 square feet of space comes in here with the addition of a small, built-in sofa directly below the bow window. Your adventure begins the second you check into your stateroom, and with incredible suites for families available on each ship, your kids might never want to leave their cabin.
